Rare 1st series dial with AP logo above 6 o'clock! This Royal Oak was overhauled by A.P. in Le Brassus at the end of 2016 (no refurbishment of bracelet and case!). The watch is in good condition and comes with the Revision documents / invoice from A.P. - Extrait de Registre / Extract from the Archives - A.P. Service Box - AP “Timepiece Life & Care” USB Stick. First introduced in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 5402 was the most expensive steel watch of its time and is now certainly the most iconic piece AP has ever produced and one of the most recognizable watches of all time! The octagonal bezel, fixed with eight hexagonal screws, gives the Royal Oak that certain something and gives it an unmistakable look. As part of the Big Four (Patek Philippe 3700, IWC 1832, Vacheron Constantin 222 and Audemars Piguet 5402), it is an absolute must-have in any vintage collection. The history of the Royal Oak, designed by the legendary Gerald Genta, dates back to the 17th century, when the English King Charles II took repair in the historic oak tree in Boscobel Woods during the English Civil Wars and escaped capture by Cromwell's army. This event is remembered in the Royal Oak every year on the 29th March. This name, which stands for longevity and strength, was subsequently used for a series of eight ships in the English navy from 1664 to 1908. The last ship was sunk at Scapa Flow during the Second World War. The noble and royal ancestry, the domination of the sea on all continents, the strength and resilience of the oak and the precision technology of the mighty gunboats were all contained in this name, this watch and this concept.
