Very rare and legendary vintage Piaget Polo with the reference 761 C 701 in 18k yellow gold. This reference is part of the first Polo series, which included three round and two square Polos, all with the so-called ‘backwinder’, i.e. the crown is not at 3 o'clock as usual, but on the case back. This gives the watch its iconic look, together with the dial, which does not break the structure of the bracelet. This design makes the Piaget Polo an absolute icon in horology to this day. Like all five of the first Polo models, this reference also features the Piaget Quartz Calibre 7P, which at the time held the world record as the thinnest quartz calibre in the world. In addition to its iconic design, the Polo also impresses with its impressive weight, but this has since proved to be its downfall, as many of the approximately 4,000 to 6,000 Polos produced were often melted down. For many years, most people did not recognise the beauty and elegance of the Polo and only paid attention to the value of the materials, but this is no longer the case today. However, the melted-down watches can never be brought back, which is why there is now a great desire for Polos that are still on the market and have not disappeared into collections. This Piaget is in very beautiful original condition. Looking at the gold hallmark on the case back, it is clear that the watch has not been refurbished often. This watch naturally also has the high total weight mentioned for the Polo models, weighing approximately 104.6 grams. The total length of the original Piaget bracelet with double folding clasp in 18k yellow gold is approx. 17.8 cm. The Polo has once again become very popular among collectors with the release of the new edition, the Piaget Polo 79, in 2024. However, the Polo still flies under the radar for many people and its beauty remains unrecognised by many. Nevertheless, it can be said that the Piaget Polo is slowly regaining its old image from the 1980s, combining elegance, class and sportiness in a single watch with two hands.
